Research

Logo research
Warner Brothers

Warner brothers film institution are one of the most successful institutions they have a logo like a shield on a sky background with the letters W and B in the main body of the shield. The main colours used are yellow and blue. This is to appeal to the target audience, The colours blue and yellow are primary colours therefore suggests that the target audience is for younger children and teenagers. The letters WB make the audience recognise that this specific logo is for the Warner brothers film institution. However is anchored to show that the logo company is Warner bros company. The clouds signify that their products (films) will be something amazing from out the world. They could also connote that the films will be dreamy because of the calm nature of clouds floating through the sky. The anchorage creates the theory of "dumbing down" this is the idea that by putting the anchorage on their logo, will make the audience clearly understand the signified meaning, therefore diminishing the intellectual level of the content. However shows that the company clearly does this due to the fact that by seeing this shield with the Wb initials the audience will gradually recognise the logo and will want to buy the products out of recognition of the logo. The Ferdinand Saussare theory states that the signifier being the letters WB creates the signified meaning of Warner Brothers. This creates the purpose of familiarity, which in theory most people would rather buy products they are familiar with. Furthermore the shield connotes that their films and powerful and will affect you as a person but also connotes the safety and strength of how they are used to protect in wars.  This however Clearly conveys the fact that their products have a great influence on their target audience being young kids or teenagers.

Paramount

However paramount uses a mountain with stars, the stars connote that the film will be as great as stars in the sky. Also may connote achievement and welfare, mindfully presenting that their films are award worthy and one of a kind. In addition the line shows that there is a baseline to the greatness of their films, showing that that their films won't fall below the great expectations it holds and will aim to achieve as high as it can. Similarly to Warner brothers their mise en scene is a sky with clouds, however in Paramount logo they have a dawn like sky. The dawn shows that there is a sun somewhere in the Unknown this creates mystery connoting that their films are also mysterious and may have a plot twist. The mountain suggests that no one can get to the top whereas they are right at the top above any other mountains or film production companies therefore their films will be the best and no one else can get as near to them, making the film company seem indisputable.

Lionsgate

Lionsgate was founded in 1997 and is one of the largest independent film production companies they have produced films such as the hunger games and Twilight: saga. The dark colours of black and blue colours connote mystery, horror and darkness. Therefore making it evident that shown that the company focuses on making adventure action and horror movies. They are an international company with a presence in motion picture production. They have more than 15,000 titles and approximately earns $1 billion a year therefore just by seeing this logo many people are familiar with the film production company and will encourage the growth of economical benefits. Lionsgate targets young people this is evidently shown as 41.6% of young adults watch their film products. The use of big bold font letters also gives the impression that the film company targets young people as it is eye-catching. Therefore depicts an impression that the film they make is so eye catching the audience won't want to take their eyes off the screen. Moreover the light in the middle connotes that there is the excitement within darkness implying that something really exciting will happen during the movie, connoting the imagery of "a light being at the end of my tunnel" presenting the films lions gate to be phenomenal and a bright light. This could also be religious imagery implying that their films are like the light of God, taking the audience into a surreal world, which the film will aim to do, so the audience can not only watch the film but 'live' the film.

Twisted Pictures

Twisted pictures is on a black Mise en scene saying this creates I depiction of danger, mystery and death through the darkness. The main colours used are blue and red the read is to connote danger and blood this creates a gory, unnerving effect on the target audience. The purpose of the logo is to show the horror genre of the company twisted pictures. This is evidently show through the barbed wire going around the words twisted pictures this creates and implies that the movies are dangerous to an aspect that the horror game it is excitable yet scary and diabolical. Also right in the middle there is a blue which seems to be Thorne, this implies that the films created by this company are so scary that it influences changes within the person watching as it will be the scariest set of films watched. Furthermore the word twisted connotes a deranged mindset, it implies a mental for emotional state of character, therefore have strong implications

20th Century Fox

20th Century Fox has big bold letters that are gold first creates an award-winning image also this implied with the spotlights going forwards towards the sky, this creates a celebrity endorsement making the film stand out and seem as if it is one of the best companies to ever create films. On the other hand the blue create a calm mood, linking this to diversion of real life as many people watch movies to escape from real life situations and to find entertainment therefore would like to watch something that suits them, usually something calming. The fact that it is 3-D makes it stand out and the audience feel close to it. Furthermore the blocks which the words are on go upwards this conveys that this company only aims to go upwards. The use of the camera angle being a low shot makes the film stand out conveying that it is one of the first film companies. Furthermore the stars in the background and the clouds create a dreamy yet excitable mood, The stars connote achievement and welfare whereas the clouds convey a more dreamy mood implying that something great will happen within the film.
Scenes in films
In my coursework I am going to do a scene that creates or communicates a specific emotion, such as unease, wonder, suspense, surprise etc, therefore I have conducted research on scenes in different horror movies as my genre is going to be a horror themed genre for the topic on "the secret".
Insidious 2
In insidious 2, the baby scene, the scene starts with an extreme close up of the main character. The effect of this shows her emotions and creates tension as the audience can see something bad it going to happen. This is also shown by the colour and lightening of the scene. Happy scenes are usually filled with lights and warm colours such as oranges and Yellows however the colour of the beginning of this scene is a musty green bleak colour. Once the dietetic sound of the lullaby starts moment is created by the baby chair, as it starts moving a short low non-diegetic sound is represented to add a dramatic effect as the woman turns her head to look where have the sound is coming from this creates ambiguity to surprise the audience. In addition the camera is panned outwards therefore a long shot is shown to where in the house the woman is. This simplifies this specific part of the film. When the supernatural ghost woman comes into the scene a close-up is shown on the woman's face this is to amplify the tension and worry, the woman face creates the audience to feel a sense of darkened emotion and mystery. Following the ghost woman as she walks and disappears, then switching cameras to a baby monitor. Then all of a sudden non diegetic sound is used again as she runs, creating a jump scare.
In my coursework assignment I would use the use of non dietetic sound and close ups of the characters to try and create a sense of tension and strong emotion.
Annabelle
At the start of the seen a extreme close-up is shown of the of the woman this is shown to imply tension and her emotion. Non-diegetic sound is used to create an build-up of tension as we set character does not hear this news is that we do. This leads to jump scare in the horror film which reflects that psychological state of the character on the screen. This is used to emotionally can say characters feelings and their world creating suspension and belief within the film. While the woman is on the floor a high angled camera shot is used this is to make her seem inferior to the supernatural occurrences happening around her. The use of non-diegetic sound and lighting is used once again the lighting is dim towards the end of the corridor this creates a sense of ambiguity and create suspension as the target audience would like to know what's down the end of the corridor. This depicts fear within the audience. As the woman is going into the bedroom the camera starts to shake this creates a sense of frustration within the audiences they still fear about what is inside the room.
Woman in Black
In the woman in black scene- she's behind you, a long shot is shown this is to make the audience become familiar with the surroundings. Non-Diegetic sounds are used to create a sense of emotional fear and unease. Slowly panning in toward the main character to show a medium shot, this is used to amplify his emotions and feelings. Lighting is used in this scene heavily this is to create tension and suspension as we as the audience have an understanding that something diabolical will occur. The camera slowly moves with him while he looks around the house and walks about this creates fear within the audience as the longer the wait  the more the suspension builds up. As he looks out of the window the camera starts to shake, this connotes unease and emotional un-stability, when suddenly the non diegetic sound appears along with the face of the supernatural woman, creating the jump scare from the audience.
Conjuring
Lighting is used in the conjuring scary scene this depicts the genre of horror as the darkness implies mystery and the fear of the unknown. I long shot is used to show familiarity of the house as the girl is walking towards the door the camera creates a close-up of her to show her emotion of fear. Furthermore non-diagetic sound is use as she gets closer to the wardrobe. And extreme close-up is shown on the little girls face before a loud sound effect is used to create a jump scare.

Film Blog Sites
I Frankenstein
One of the film blog sites I have looked at is http://www.ifrankensteinfilm.com, just by looking at the website we understand that the genre is Gothic horror this is represented in a variety of ways. Gideon the main character and was shown to connote Gothic horror by using lightning to create an unnatural mood on the audience presenting Gideon to be supernatural. Corresponding miss-en-scene was used to connotes the genre by having a full moon and trees in the background to create the mood of darkness with ambiguity this is because we associate full moons with unnatural moods and unnerving and frightening events like death and tragedy.
Furthermore the website puts the logo constantly on the bottom of the page this is for the audience to understand that the film belongs to them as institutions usually use their copy-written logo on their products, this encourages the audience to become familiar with the logo and encourages other products to be sold by the company as people will be familiar with the logo, this also helps and economic wealth through the popularity of the logo. This is especially good if a person has watched a good film which was produced by this company as this will create familiarity especially if people know this company to be a reputable institution.
Also they have social buttons on their website, this is so that the audience can quickly access and share the website. Creating an interactive view point which will relate to the audience but also increases the economic benefits of the company and its products and the more people who 'tweet or share' it etc the more popular the product will become making the film more successful, this makes it more personal which Galtung and Ruges 11 theories. One of them being personalisation – this is making media products more personal to the audience meaning they can interact more.
Furthermore they use moving images; this is to make the website more appealing. They use specific shots to create character status and strength, they present the main characters Adam and Gideon to be dominant as they use low angle shots this is make them seem more masculine and important. However for the other characters such as most of the women in I Frankenstein they use a high angle shot this is to make them seem inferior. Women are represented as vulnerable; this is due to the high angles camera shots to show helplessness. Furthermore the website shows the woman looking behind the man who is powerful and dominant therefore connotes that woman is seen to be vulnerable and implies that she needs saving and looking after. Also Terra is presented as sweet and innocent we understand this because she is dressed in white, with a glowing white all around her showing femininity and almost gives a sense of her personality. Also in the website the women are quite far down the navigation panel to show helplessness and insignificance.
This is important as it not only shows gender inequality in the films but the characters strengths and weaknesses. Also implying any stereotypes such as men are the heros.
Annabelle
The website for the film Annabelle is dark this creates mystery creating tension and relates to a satanic film this is shown as darkness usually has the unknown which most people associate with the devil, demon and the supernatural.
Furthermore they use moving images this is to appeal the target audience as horror fans would rather see scary parts of the film and best bits to create the impression that the film will be the scariest seen. Also for social network if you move the mouse over the image a sharing button appears to share with other social media. This appeals to the target audience as they will be able to share with their friends, family and others.
Also the effect of putting half the dolls face on the screen connotes a sense of fear as audience doesn't know the full story of the doll. This builds up suspense as it implies that, that's only half the story shown. This also is associated with the rule of thirds, this makes the audience more interested drawing their attention towards the doll.
I have conducted research and asked some of the pubic their opinions on what makes a good horror movie?
Brandon Hall, 16, said that a good horror movie is made up of occurrences that play tricks on your mind, as you have no idea what is happening, however the tension and suspense builds up creating a diabolical mood. Furthermore he said that a good horror movie has pathetic fallacy and jump scares to create an excitable yet horrific atmospheric mood in the scene. As my target is 15-20 year olds I have decided to ask the audience around this age.
Caine Cookey, 16, said a good horror movie includes ghosts, zombies, vampires, blood and supernatural occurrences. For example poltergeists where an object can be thrown across the room. Also he suggested that the best location for the horror film to be set is in a haunted house or graveyard.
Arlene, 20, said that a good horror movie is produced by having a variety of suspense, non-diegetic sounds this to create a scary scene. Furthermore loud crashes in the middle of silence is tension building, good and appropriate special effects could also be used to amplify the horrific film. A graveyard, dark setting, cellar, attic. Shadows, and wolves crying, would also make a good horror scene. Moreover exorcism could be used.
According to facts the genre of horror, speaks directly and instinctively to the humans. Involuntary psychology have made our minds fearful of certain fear triggers as a survival instinct, such as the Fear of the Dark where predatory animals, supernatural creatures and mythical beings might be lurking in the darkness. Also other fears such as fears of animals with large sharp teeth and Poisonous Spiders which may kill you.
 My ideas

I have conducted and large amount of research and I thought that this would be a good logo. The red DW stands for DeathWish and signifies the colour of the devil which implies that my movies will be is full of blood yet passion, conveying to the target audience that my movie will be a horror movie. The font used is makes the writing seem creepy and connotes the gruesome nightmare of the film. The main image is a skull with a lightning bolt through the eye and another one coming out of the skulls head. This is a symbol of warning of danger and on imaginable power and spirituality it is also a symbol of death and demonises the film by amplification of the satanic meaning of hell. It is black to associate the target audience with fear and the unknown such as supernatural occurrences and implying a negative connotation towards the film making the purpose of the logo successful. This use of pathetic fallacy creates a deeper mood to darkness and the perspective of the film.
Research has helped my build my own ideas as for my film production I am going to do the genre as "the secret" my purpose is to entertain the audience. It will be aimed to appeal to 15-20 year olds.
In my film is will be a supernatural horror secret, which will include supernormal occurrences, such as ghosts, poltergeists and other elements of denomination possession.
I will aim to use dimmer lighting to create a mysterious and scary mood; this is effective as it builds up tension therefore making the audience build up in suspense.
Also I would have my characters shot at a low angle if I wanted them to look more dominant and powerful however shot from a high angle to make them inferior and when a scary scene is happening it creates tension and fear.
Furthermore I aim to use pan shots this builds up suspension within the audience, making it more excitable to watch, as it feels as if the audience is in the film too and walking with the characters in the film.
